Last week I got a chance to play Mystery Express a new game from Days of Wonder. The one sentence description is “like Clue on a train.” While that is the jumping off point, it takes it to the next level.
Instead of 1 set of cards for suspects there are 2 sets. To rule someone out, you have to see both in one turn (or know where they both are). For most of the game, cards shift hands and are then placed in a player’s discard pile. The same is true for the method, motive and location cards. This means that you need to pay attention during other people’s turn to see where cards you give out end up.
The fifth element to solve for is the time of the murder. There are 3 sets of time cards and instead of being in player’s hands, they are shown to you quickly using different methods. If you are a good card counter you can solve it easily.
While I found it enjoyable, I discovered that it is a bad game to play while running a store. If you don’t watch the others’ turns, you will lose track of where cards end up and won’t be able to solve for all five elements. This is a game to sharpen your deductive powers and manage your time. I’d give it a strong 7 out of 10.
Since Butch can’t make it this weekend, he and Colin snuck in a quick game to start the 1500 point armies.

Thursday, we will be playing Legends of the 5 Rings.
Friday, starting at 6:30 we will be running Magic. Most of our players are interested in arriving and starting earlier, so we will be trying that.

Sunday at noon is the pre-release tournament for the new Magic set, Rise of the Eldrazi. The $30 fee gets you 8 booster packs, promo cards, free pizza and prizes. Prizes will be awarded at the rate of 3 packs for each 2 people that register.
Speaking of magic, there is a new promotion for Friday Night Magic. For each new player that has never been to the store before, you will receive 3 punches on your booster card. Bring in three people for a free booster pack.
Saturday is Shadowfist Saturday. Shadowfist is the Hong Kong cinematic action card game. Games starts at 1.
Competing for your attention will be the Warmachine Mk II Demo going on at the same time.

Evil Hat Productions is releasing The Dresden Files RPG. Because they are cooler than your average company, they have a special deal with us. Last night we finally had enough players that we ran a magic draft. Unfortunately, we ran a little behind, and then a little late. But it was still a good first night.
