EW - MW - LW & v.3
« on: February 28, 2013, 10:22:25 PM »

OK, trying to collect some info, presently it looks like this:

EW: All three books have addendum in the form of a free pdf download:
http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/ThirdEdition/EarlyWarThirdEdition.pdf
ERgo, they are v.3 ready.

MW: nothing v.3 about it.  predictions as to the release of the MW books in v.3 are as late as spring 2014.  Nothing concrete.  No v.3 downloads.  This means that everyone will have to remember to update the special rules on their gear from the other two periods (ie German 10.5cm howitzer "Breakthu Gun").  However, all the points will be a bit off.

LW: completely v.3 at this point with just a few stray pdfs that need updating.

My personal opinion is that I'd play any of them.  I don't think the point system is that precise and I am also certain that player proficiency is the most important factor.  I'd be willing to say that a swing of 10% in points for an entire list doesn't really matter much on the tabletop.

I was reading my MW books...I have to say that it is a great period with the most variety of gear as a total, from EW gear that's hanging on to LW gear that is brand new.  and plenty of armies that are transitioning from 1939 to 1943.  Interesting stuff.

The MW compilation set is available right now. The Warstore has had them for about a week.

NOTE: From the previews on the Battlefront website these books have NOT been changed in any way & are not V.3 - the links take you to the old 2009 preview pages. I guess you will have to buy them all over again when they re-do them - AGAIN for V.3!

Until they re-print Eastern Front with the lower points for V.3 ROF 1, the MW Soviet T-70 tanks & heavy armor is unplayable. You will get a break on the points for V.3 Hen & Chick however...... ::)

LW books will need a .pdf to correct the U.S. TD rules & AT for 17 & 6 pdrs.. Maybe the Bulge compilation will have the new TD rules included when it comes out next year (?). I hope the D-Day books will be corrected when released (again) in June.

The AT of the 17pdrs and such might not be altered for all the books, since it was held to be caused by new ammunition types rather than the gun itself.  That's just hearsay, but I don't see any correction for that.

I don't see the points being that precise - and I'll be happy to play Russians in MW to attempt to prove that, if only someone will loan them to me!  I still can't decide which I like better - junky horde companies or small elite ones.

Also, if it's a consolation to anyone you will get 50% off the new Turning Tide and Earth & Steel books if you already own copies.

Meanwhile, the boyz and I are playing some EW on Sunday afternoon!

Battlefront's stated reason for changing the AT for the 17pdrs. has nothing to do with APDS ammo. They just decided from looking at reports of armor penetration & ranges that the AT should be higher. I don't think there is a "(late)" marked after them on the stat list in MG (I'll check). If not, this means that all books with Firefly's & 17 pdrs. need to be corrected.

The 6 pdr. AT was changed because of the availability of APDS ammo later in the war and they are marked as (late). I don't think there are any British lists later than Market Garden so this is not an issue unless they intend to change the U.S. 57mm AT gun too.

Bob & I will be playing league games Sunday.

See you then.
